Loving our Garden

I have never been much of a gardener, and in all honesty have been pretty uninterested in becoming a gardener. That is, until we renovated our garden. Suddenly I really enjoy it! I don’t like weeding and I still don’t really know what I am doing but I do enjoy choosing plants and seeing them grow. Luckily hubs knows a bit more about gardening than I do so it is very much a joint effort.

Renovating our back garden was such a good decision as we spend a lot of time out there and it really is looking so lovely out there now.Β We just bought some beautiful new plants to inject some more colour and texture. We like to try and mix up things that flower at different times of year and are different colours to keep a nice bit of variety. (You can see the before and afters of the renovation here.)

Monkey loves the garden and he loves gardening too. He is great at watering the garden, with the hose or a watering can and he just loves to dig. We do have to stop him digging up plants as he can be a bit overenthusisastic sometimes! He loves helping though and is always happy to push bits around in his wheelbarrow too, little love!

I’m also really proud of him as lately he has gotten so inquisitive with bugs and beasties that we find when gardening. He so so loved finding some wiggly worms when we were digging at the weekend. Β just love seeing how happy he is to touch and explore them. He has picked up woodlice, ants, ladybirds and all sorts too.Monkey and worm

I’m proud of myself too as I hate all these things and don’t like touching them but I try really hard not to share my fear with him. I really don’t want him to learn to be scared of things because they scare me, if that makes sense.

We really enjoy all of our time outside together and hope we can continue to for many years, and get LM involved too when we are less concerned about her eating mud and worms :).

Do you like gardening with your kids?

My word of the week is gardening.

  1. Oh it looks lovely. I have spurts where I do it and then forget and the flowers die oops.
Bedding plants annoy me as you spend all that money and then they don’t last more than a season.
I need to take an interest again especially when people come round πŸ˜‰

    • Thanks lovely oh and totally with ou on the bedding plants, too much effort for too little reward! We are all about the perennials that come back year after year πŸ™‚ xx

  2. Lovely space you’ve got there. When I was pregnant I stopped to rescue a worm from a busy path and my wife freaked out. She was convinced I’d catch some nasty disease and get the baby sick (from a regular old earth worm). I’m not sure if our lad will be permitted to a lot of messing around with bugs πŸ™‚

  3. Love your garden – so colourful and pretty. Monkey looks like he loves helping you out and finding creepy crawlies. I’m not much of a gardener either and neither is my hubby but we’re gradually trying to get ours under control. Glad that you are enjoying working on yours πŸ™‚

  4. We love our garden too, we can’t wait for a bigger one to do more to it. Alfie loves being outside and helping Daddy, he’s such an outdoor child. Looks like monkey is having a great time!

  5. Oh yes, I have the gardening bug, too, and my girl really enjoys helping me out there. She amazes me with how many of the plants she can name, and loves pruning and weeding with me. Both of the kids love going on mini beast hunts and regularly bring me creatures that they find! Glad you’re all enjoying it so much, thanks for sharing with #WotW x

  6. Aww I need to turn into you Caroline and get some green fingers. You all look like you having such fun and Monkey is well brave! Hubby is brave letting the monster have the hose. We get completely soaked if we do that πŸ™‚ xx #wotw

  7. For a non gardener this is amazing! I think you are more of an expert than you realise as your garden looks perfect to me, full of colour and interest. Well done Monkey on his bug hunting, we have been doing lots of this too during activity hour on the farm, there is so much to discover in the garden in the summer months. Thank you for sharing with me on Country Kids.

  8. I bought a compost bin a few weeks ago and have become somewhat obsessed with it! We are moving soon and quite shockingly for me I am planning on plants and raised beds whereas before its all about the inside! x

  9. We have recently moved to a house with a garden so I’ve started getting into gardening too. I’m not terribly green fingered and have lost a couple of plants but it’s all good fun and H helps me too! It all looks lovely! Xx

  10. That sentence at the end reminds me of the fact that my parents always used to tell stories of me trying to eat earth out of the flower beds and the cats food too when I was a baby πŸ™‚ Lovely that Monkey is so engaged – little children just love being outside and I think their parents passions definitely rub off on them. The garden really is looking lovely too – your swing set looks like fun! #ordinarymoments

  11. I love your new garden, so colourful. We took on an allotment last year but have only planted fruit and vegetables so far, I never thought I was green fingered either, but I am loving the fresh food harvests. I cant wait for next year now and to grow so flowers to make it pretty! I understand what you mean about the beasties, my children bring them inside to show me! Eugh! x

Thanks for taking the time to write something. I love comments and read every one xx
