We have had a huge wonderful event in our house and one I am so excited about. Monkey can ride his bicycle!
We bought his bike last year as a 3rd birthday present, but he just couldn’t get it. We knew it would come when he was ready so didn’t force the issue too much… Even though I was looking forward to the day when we could go on a family bike ride.
I persuaded him to try a couple of times earlier this year but “its too hard work” was always the response. Then in March his good friend Felix got a bike for his 4th birthday and basically hasn’t stopped riding it since then and was even off stabilisers after a few weeks. Monkey was suitably impressed and showed a lot of interest in his bike after that. We got him out on his again a few times and he definitely improved though he still said it was hard and tiring. His uncle even helped out but laughed and said he was lazy as he wanted to be pushed all the time haha.
Then I realised his tyres needed pumping up. In fact, *bad parent alert* his back tyre was flat as a pancake! No wonder it was hard work. We pumped his tyres up and he improved almost immediately. After a few more practice runs it clicked and he just suddenly got it. He even figured out how to move his pedals to the right position to start himself off. He is loving getting out on his bike so much and we are so so proud of him.
We have been out on his bike loads this week and Daddy even got his bike out too. LM adores running in front or behind too and finds the whole thing hilarious at the moment. He’s still pretty slow so a little while until no stabilisers I think but he does keep talking about Felix riding without his so who knows. We have sorted helmets now (his head his so big he fits in Daddy’s haha) and pumped up the tyres on my bike and I was quite excited to take both kiddies on a short bike ride on my own. LM wasn’t sure at first but then started enjoying it I think. Difficult to see when she is sat behind me haha.
Right now I am just looking forward to hubs recovering from his knee op so we can all work towards a nice family bike ride, even if just a short one to start with!
Ah he has done so well, so quickly!! Sometimes the push of a friend is all you need eh? I bet it won’t be long before the stabilisers are off and also LM wants one! Speedy recovery hubs!! Thanks for sharing with #bestandworst x
Aw, congrats little man! We’re just trying to get my boy to pedal on his tricycle but he can’t grasp it bless him haha. #whatevertheweather
Yaaay well done little one. Looks like he is having a fab time 🙂 #whatevertheweather
My daughter loves cycling but son fell off 3 years ago and now won’t go 🙁 I love being out on my bike
Oh bless him!! You must be so proud! I can’t wait to get my little babes propped up on a bike and enjoy our first family bike ride. No rush though, as I bet I’ll be a bag of worry when they do. Such lovely pictures to x #whatevertherweather
Is it really sad that during reading your post and looking at your pictures I was singing… feel the rhythm, feel the vibe, come on now its Monkey’s bike ride time? Yep thought so. Go little guy (air fist pump – whoop) #bestandworst Renee@peonieandme x
Well done him. Sounds like he’s really taken to it. We struggled with bike riding and eventually got him a one to one lesson which sorted things out. We now need to get a bigger bike.
Hooray, that’s great news. He looks like he’s doing so well. It’s so nice to be able to cycle as a family. I made the mistake of letting my daughter cycle with flat tyres once. I thought she was being lazy as she was so slow, but it was really hard work for her!
Thanks for linking up with Loud ‘n’ Proud 🙂
Well done little man! And don’t beat yourself up about the tyre thing, really!
We’re big bike riders in our house and our children really benefited from being on balance bikes – and our boy could go quite fast on his, keeping up with his big sister on her peddle bike! – before getting their pedal bikes. Finding places to go for family bike rides is a lovely thing to do together, I hope once your hubby’s knee is better, you find some fab bike routes!
It’s great to see Monkey gaining confidence on his bike, it gives kids the little bit of extra freedom when they can ride their bike. Family bike rides are something we still enjoy here and I can often persuade a couple of mine to come out with me for an afternoon cycle ride. I bet you can’t wait until your hubby’s knee’s up for a family cycle ride, it’s great exercise for knees! Thanks for linking up with me on #CountryKids.
Aww fantastic, sometimes a bit of peer pressure can work wonders. He looks super cool and hopefully you’ll get that family cycle ride soon.

That’s fabulous – well done to Monkey on learning to ride his bike and how lovely that you can start to look forward to family bike rides. LM looks quite happy sitting on the back of the bike too! 🙂
Aww, cycling is so much fun! I was so pleased when O finally ride his bike too, it’s great to get out cycling together! Your LM has the same hat as my littlest too. He loves zooming on the back of my bike! Thanks for linking up to #Whatevertheweather x
